Indigenous communities in Argentina face rising land repression

Indigenous communities in Argentina are facing increased repression and territorial dispossession. Under the current administration, there is a reported escalation in land disputes, the weakening of Law 26.160, and the deregulation of land ownership.

In Salta, the Lule people are in permanent assembly due to imminent demolition threats against the homes of more than 50 families in the San Lorenzo area. Authorities cite environmental and water preservation as the basis for these orders, while critics argue that real estate development and luxury housing for wealthy sectors are being prioritized over indigenous inhabitants.

Additionally, the provincial state has ceded lands to the Tigres Rugby Club, further impacting local families. In the Chaco region of Salta, indigenous communities continue to demand basic access to potable water, electricity, healthcare, and education.
