Indigenous communities in Brazil face varying judicial actions
In Paraná, the Court of Justice (TJPR) conducted a documentation drive in the Marrecas Indigenous Territory between September 21 and 25. The initiative, which prioritized elderly residents, resulted in the issuance of over 100 birth certificates and provided guidance on obtaining civil documentation. The project was coordinated by Judge Glauco Alessandro de Oliveira in partnership with Funai, local social services, and educational institutions to reduce the need for residents to travel for essential services.
In Pará, a judicial decision has imposed electronic monitoring and other precautionary measures on four indigenous leaders following a territorial dispute. While a request for preventive detention regarding alleged kidnapping was denied, the leaders must now wear electronic ankle monitors and maintain a 500-meter distance from employees of a security firm. The conflict stems from an incident in February 2026, where armed security guards working for Sapucaya Agroflorestal were intercepted by the Turiwara people while mapping indigenous territories with drones.
