Indigenous cultural learning initiatives in Ontario and Canada

The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) held Indigenous Cultural Learning Days throughout October to connect First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students with land and culture. Held at locations including Cooper’s Marsh Conservation Area, Foley Mountain Conservation Area, and a community garden in Kemptville, the events featured activities such as smudging, beading, and medicine walks.

Led by members of the CDSBEO Indigenous Education Team, students engaged in traditional practices including learning about the qulliq and preparing bannock over a fire. These initiatives aim to support students in exploring their identity and strengthening connections to the land.

In a broader national context, June is recognized as National Indigenous History Month in Canada, with June 21 marking National Indigenous Peoples Day. This period serves to celebrate the diverse cultures of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples and acknowledges the historical and ongoing impacts of colonialism and the residential school system.
