Indigenous entrepreneur launches organic coffee brand in Roraima
Ana Karolliny, a 25-year-old Macuxi descendant, is leading a pioneering agricultural initiative in the Kauê Indigenous Community in Pacaraima, Roraima. Her project, Café Imerú, has become the first brand in the state to produce its own organic Arabica coffee.
Despite the challenges of Roraima’s high average temperatures, the project succeeds by utilizing a microclimate at an altitude of 930 meters and the nutrient-rich soil found in the transition between forest and savanna. The production follows an organic agroforestry system, using traditional agricultural practices and manual irrigation. What began as a family experiment has evolved into a sustainable business model that repurposes all fruit byproducts on the property.
