Indigenous groups in Santa Cruz demand legislative representation

Indigenous Chiquitano and Guaraní organizations have declared a state of emergency in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, protesting the lack of official recognition for their elected representatives in the Departmental Legislative Assembly.

The Chiquitano Indigenous Organization (OICH) is demanding a response within 24 hours from the Departmental Electoral Tribunal (TED) regarding the suspension of an assembly originally scheduled for October 20. Leaders claim the suspension followed an individual legal challenge by a former faction leader, which they argue should not have halted the democratic process. OICH representatives have warned of radicalizing protests, including potential hunger strikes, if the issue is not resolved.

Guaraní representatives also joined the demonstrations at the TED offices, alleging that they have been elected since May but are being blocked by bureaucratic delays and legal maneuvering. Protesters emphasized that despite being among the largest and most populous groups in the department, they currently lack a seat in the assembly.
