Indigenous heritage and language revitalization events marked for November
In observance of Native American Heritage Month, various institutions are hosting programs focused on Indigenous culture, arts, and language preservation.
In Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History will host a free screening of “Chasing Voices: The Story of John Peabody Harrington.” The documentary, directed by Daniel Golding, examines the work of the linguist who documented over 100 Native American languages. The event includes a panel discussion on language revitalization featuring James Yee, a descendant of the Barbareño Chumash Indians.
Other regional activities include workshops, community dinners, and exhibitions. The Many Nations Longhouse is hosting craft nights and cultural dinners, while the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is featuring the Jeffrey Gibson exhibition. Additional educational opportunities include workshops on mapmaking and various lectures hosted by academic institutions.
