Indigenous journalists meet to address rising hate and racism

Journalists from the World Indigenous Broadcasters Network (WIBN) recently gathered in Kautokeino for a conference to discuss the growing challenges facing indigenous media. Participants, including approximately 150 attendees from around the world, highlighted that hate, threats, and racism have become daily realities for indigenous journalists.

Nils Johan Heatta, former head of NRK Sápmi and a co-founder of WIBN, emphasized that indigenous perspectives and knowledge are increasingly vital to the world. He noted that the network, which has roots in indigenous cooperation dating back to the 1970s, serves as a crucial platform for sharing experiences and setting new professional goals.

Tanya Denning-Orman, head of indigenous media at Australia’s SBS, noted that indigenous media is needed more than ever and expressed optimism regarding the increasing activity and dedication of journalists within the network.
