Indigenous knowledge and climate education initiatives expand in Brazil
In Brazil, indigenous knowledge is being integrated into local environmental education. The Caianas collective, composed of Terena families from the Cachoeirinha Indigenous Land, recently held a training session at the Sulivan Silvestre Oliveira – Tumune Kalivono Municipal School. The program focused on climate change, ethno-environmental education, and sustainability. Led by coordinator Ederval Antonio, the collective emphasizes the role of elders in transmitting traditional knowledge to younger generations and has intensified its pedagogical work in 2024 regarding agroecology and land care.
Separately, in the Costa Sul region of São Sebastião, the Luz da Consciência project is introducing climate education and clean energy to public schools. Developed by the Instituto Conservação Costeira (ICC) and sponsored by EDP, the initiative includes 30 workshops and the installation of a 5 kW solar photovoltaic system. The project aims to directly serve 200 students and staff, with an estimated community reach of one thousand people, focusing on topics such as electrical safety and climate change prevention.
