Indigenous leader Eusebio Villanueva Domínguez seeks Paraguay Ombudsman role

Eusebio Villanueva Domínguez, an indigenous youth leader from the Guaná community, has presented his candidacy for the Ombudsman and Deputy Ombudsman positions before the Senate's Constitutional Affairs Commission in Paraguay.

During his testimony, Villanueva Domínguez emphasized the need for the institution to protect indigenous rights and ancestral properties. He argued that the Ombudsman's Office must intervene before damage to these communities becomes irreversible. He specifically called for greater oversight regarding reports of land violations and urged the state to ensure the legality of procedures to prevent violent evictions.

He noted that the state has previously faced international lawsuits before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights regarding the violation of native lands, citing cases such as the Sawhoyamaxa, Xákmok Kásek, and Yakye Axa territories. Villanueva Domínguez stated his position would be to defend native peoples against excesses, noting that evictions affect not just people, but their territory and culture.
