Indigenous leader Olivia Bisa targeted in attack in Peruvian Amazon

Olivia Bisa Tirko, president of the Autonomous Territorial Government of the Chapra Nation, was targeted in a violent intimidation attempt in the Loreto region of the Peruvian Amazon on September 6. While traveling with her husband, mother-in-law, and two children, a motorcycle deliberately blocked their vehicle, forcing an emergency maneuver to avoid a ravine. The occupants followed the family to the community of Angamos, where one individual reportedly made gestures simulating a firearm pointed at her head.

This incident marks one of at least eight reported attacks against Bisa and her family. As a prominent Indigenous leader, she has campaigned against oil expansion, logging, and illegal activities in Indigenous territories. The Chapra Nation reported that local police initially refused to accept their complaint, though the case has since been brought to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Human rights organizations and political figures, including Senator Ruth Luque, have called for urgent government protection measures. While Peru has decrees regarding protection mechanisms, critics argue they lack adequate coordination and specific funding. This follows Bisa’s recent international advocacy, including testimony before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
