Seven people, including prominent indigenous leader Tiago Honorio dos Santos (known as Tiago Karai), died in a traffic accident on the MS-180 highway in Mato Grosso do Sul. The incident occurred on a Friday night near the Yvy Katu Indigenous Territory, between the municipalities of Iguatemi and Japorã.
According to the Highway Military Police Battalion (BPMRv), a semi-trailer detached from a car carrier truck and struck a Chevrolet Spin traveling in the opposite direction. All occupants of the car were members of the Kalipety village from the Tenondé Porã Indigenous Territory in São Paulo.
The deceased include Tiago Karai, 34; his wife, Laudiceia Benites, 31; their two children, aged 7 and 14; Tiago’s sister, Cleonice Honorio dos Santos, 42; and two other community members, Ileo Benites, 30, and Genilson Euzébio Karay Mirim, 32. The group was reportedly in Mato Grosso do Sul for a cultural exchange between indigenous communities.
Minister of Indigenous Peoples Sônia Guajajara and the Federal Public Ministry expressed deep condolences, noting Tiago Karai’s significant role as a coordinator for the Comissão Guarani Yvyrupa and his work in defending Guarani rights.
