Indigenous men in Alice Springs seek connection to Country
Men from the non-profit mentoring organization Red Dust Role Models recently held a gathering in the East MacDonnell ranges near Alice Springs. The event aimed to address the complex social issues facing men in the central desert region, including high rates of domestic, family, and sexual violence.
Traditional owner Damien Kunoth and other community leaders emphasized the importance of reconnecting young Indigenous men with their ancestral lands. Kunoth noted that being on Country helps young people move away from the negative influences found in town, such as drugs, alcohol, and the legal system, fostering self-sufficiency and a connection to their homelands.
