Indigenous nations lead Canadian data sovereignty and AI adoption
Indigenous nations in Canada are leading efforts in data sovereignty and technology adoption. Animikii, a British Columbia-based tech company, has entered a pilot partnership with the Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation in Manitoba to secure the stewardship of community historical data.
Through its Niiwin platform, Animikii supports the ‘DataBack’ movement, which aims to return Indigenous data to Indigenous ownership rather than temporary licensing. The platform provides tools for local hosting, flexible governance, and no-code knowledge mapping. Jeff Ward, founder and CEO of Animikii, stated that sovereignty supports nationhood by allowing communities to manage their own data and regain control over information previously extracted from them.
Beyond data stewardship, Indigenous communities are showing rapid adoption of new technologies. Research indicates that Indigenous workers are adopting AI faster than their counterparts, and Indigenous-led businesses are growing more quickly than their peers. To support this trend, the First Nations Technology Council is providing introductory AI courses to enhance digital literacy.
