Indigenous Policing Services hosts youth paddling event at Cultus Lake
The RCMP’s Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment (UFVRD) Indigenous Policing Services (IPS) recently partnered with the Chilliwack and Fraser-Cascade school districts to host an outdoor learning event at Cultus Lake, British Columbia.
Students from Vedder Middle School and the Two Rivers Education Centre participated in canoeing, teamwork exercises, and skill-building activities. The event featured the use of traditional canoes, including the 36-foot “Reconciliation Queen,” which serves as a symbol of connection and reconciliation.
Knowledge Keepers were present to provide teachings, songs, and drumming throughout the day. According to Sgt. Jaden Courtney of the IPS, the initiative aims to strengthen relationships, advance reconciliation, and foster positive interactions between youth, community partners, and police officers. The IPS utilizes a fleet of traditional canoes and handcrafted paddles provided by master canoe builder and former Skowkale First Nation Chief Mark Point.
