Indigenous Policing Summit emphasizes community-led action
The Indigenous Policing Summit in Saskatchewan brought together speakers and policing representatives from across Canada to address Indigenous policing, community safety, and the development of meaningful relationships between police and First Nations.
Members of the Maskwacis RCMP attended the summit to gather ideas for community adaptation, such as a proposed youth day camp designed to foster engagement between young people, the Nation, and law enforcement. The discussions occurred amidst the ongoing reconciliation process, marking ten years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released its final report and five years since the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls released its Calls for Justice.
Constable A/Cpl. Catlin Chiasson emphasized that the summit highlighted the necessity of moving from dialogue to tangible action, noting that conversations regarding Indigenous policing must lead to concrete results and an acknowledgment of historical contexts.
