Indigenous populations and language speakers in Michoacán

According to the 2023 National Survey of Demographic Dynamics (ENADID) by INEGI, more than 259,000 people aged three and older speak an indigenous language in Michoacán, representing 5.4% of that population. Additionally, approximately 1.9 million people, or 38.3% of the state's population, identify as indigenous.

In the municipalities with the highest number of indigenous language speakers are Chilchota, Uruapan, Los Reyes, Nahuatzen, and Paracho. Nationally, Michoacán ranks 11th in the number of indigenous language speakers according to the 2020 Census.

In support of these communities, the College of Scientific and Technological Studies of the State of Michoacán (Cecytem) reports serving over 400 students from the Otomí, Nahua, Mazahua, and Purépecha peoples. The institution provides inclusive education across 12 educational centers in various municipalities, including Hidalgo, Pátzcuaro, and Maravatío, emphasizing the preservation of native languages and cultural traditions.
