Indigenous research network launched by New Zealand and Canadian universities

A new five-year global research network, titled ‘Our research futures: Indigenous pathways for research in higher education,’ has been established to reshape how university systems support Indigenous knowledge. Co-led by researchers from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and Cape Breton University in Canada, the project aims to create frameworks that ensure the success, wellbeing, and sustainability of Indigenous scholars across various academic disciplines.

The initiative received approximately $499,993 CAD ($613,488 NZD) from Canada’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council through its Insight Grant programme. The research will involve multilingual work in te reo Māori, Mi’kmaw, Nahuatl, English, and French. Planned outputs include international gatherings, multimedia productions, digital learning resources, mentorship programs, and new publications to support Indigenous-led research and create academic pipelines for new Indigenous voices.
