Indigenous rights and governance developments in Australia

September 13 marks the 19th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). In Australia, advocates and legal experts are calling for the full implementation of these international standards to ensure the dignity, culture, and self-determination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

In the Northern Territory, a significant shift in Indigenous land authority is occurring as the Dilak Council, representing 13 Yolŋu clans, establishes the standalone Dilak Land Council. This breakaway from the Northern Land Council represents a major overhaul of regional governance and economic self-determination.

Additionally, the AFL has launched its inaugural Indigenous and Multicultural Futures program in Melbourne. The initiative is an elite development program designed to support 17 and 18-year-old talent as they transition into state talent pathways.
