Indigenous urban culture events scheduled in São Paulo municipalities
Municipalities in the São Paulo metropolitan area are hosting events to celebrate and recognize indigenous populations living in urban environments.
In Itapevi, the ‘Povos Indígenas em Contextos Urbanos’ event will take place on August 15 at Parque da Cohab. The program includes Toré traditional dances, workshops on graphic arts, environmental education, and discussions regarding ancestry. The event aims to highlight the diversity of Brazil's 391 recognized ethnic groups, featuring representatives from the Pankararé, Kaingang, Guarani, Pataxó, Yanomami, and Munduruku peoples.
Simultaneously, Guarulhos will host its 1st Meeting of Indigenous Peoples in an Urban Context in the Pimentas region. Organized by leaders Day Puri and Cacique Alex Kaimbé, the gathering seeks to provide visibility to indigenous residents in the metropolis and discuss public policies. The event will feature Toré rituals, collective discussions with leaders, and the sale of artisanal crafts.
