Indira Gandhi assassinated by security guards in New Delhi

On October 31, 1984, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards while walking from her residence to her office in New Delhi. The attackers, identified as Beant Singh and Satwant Singh, opened fire near the gate of her office on Akbar Road.

According to court records and eyewitness accounts, Beant Singh first fired a revolver, followed by Satwant Singh using a Sten gun. A total of 30 bullets were reportedly fired. Gandhi was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where she was pronounced dead at 2:23 PM at the age of 66.

The assassination occurred months after Operation Blue Star, a military action in June 1984 aimed at removing armed separatists from the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The operation caused significant damage and casualties, fueling deep resentment within the Sikh community.

Following the shooting, a confrontation occurred in the guard room where Beant Singh was killed and Satwant Singh was apprehended. Singh was sentenced to death in 1986 and executed in January 1989. The Prime Minister's death triggered widespread anti-Sikh violence across Delhi and other parts of India.
