Indira Xavier proposes unified, demilitarized police for Minas Gerais
Indira Xavier, the sole female candidate for the governorship of Minas Gerais representing Unidade Popular, has proposed a significant overhaul of the current Brazilian policing model. Her platform includes the demilitarization of the Military Police and the unification of the Military and Civil Police forces.
According to Xavier, merging these forces aims to reduce bureaucracy, eliminate rivalries, and allow officers to perform both preventive and investigative duties. She advocates for a community-based policing model that focuses on resolving daily conflicts through intelligence rather than increased incarceration.
Addressing the rising sense of insecurity, Xavier argues that expanding the prison system does not solve the root causes of crime. Instead, she proposes investing in education, culture, and job creation to address the social foundations of crime, noting that many small thefts currently go unsolved due to a lack of developed intelligence capabilities.
