Individual in Thakurgaon claims gender transition and marries woman

A person in the Salandar Union of Thakurgaon, Bangladesh, has sparked local discussion after claiming to have transitioned from female to male and subsequently marrying a young woman.

Formerly known as Suma Islam, the individual now identifies as Rafi Islam. According to local reports, the marriage took place after the couple eloped due to opposition from the woman's family. The bride stated she married Rafi out of love.

Local residents noted a change in the individual's behavior and clothing habits prior to the marriage. While the individual expressed intentions to formalize their identity through medical and legal processes, local officials and medical professionals have noted a lack of documented medical evidence regarding the transition. Dr. Rakibul Alam of Thakurgaon General Hospital noted that while intersex conditions exist, sudden gender transitions require medical verification which has not been provided in this case.
