ITBP Chief confirms ongoing face-offs with Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh

Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), has confirmed that face-offs between Indian and Chinese troops are continuing at several locations along the Arunachal Pradesh border. The confrontations, which have been noted in areas such as Asaphila and Maja within the Upper Subansiri district, involve the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and ITBP personnel.

In response to these tensions, the ITBP is accelerating a modernization drive to adapt to changing warfare patterns. Key measures include the formation of the ‘Shaurya Commandos’—a new combat unit to be deployed in every border battalion—and the establishment of drone platoons across all border units. The force is also developing underground infrastructure and a new ‘Strike’ training course to prepare for high-intensity combat similar to the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that border situations deteriorate when Chinese forces deviate from established patrolling patterns. While military communication channels, including flag meetings and hotlines, remain active to manage tensions, the ITBP chief emphasized that traditional warfare methods are no longer sufficient to counter China, whom he described as India’s “biggest adversary.”
