Indonesia 5G coverage projected to reach 32% by 2030
Indonesia's 5G network coverage is projected to reach 32% of the population by 2030, according to the GSMA Mobile Economy Asia Pacific 2026 report. While current coverage stands at approximately 10%, the share of 5G connections is expected to rise from 4% in 2025 to 28% by 2030, alongside a decline in 4G usage.
This growth is expected to be driven by spectrum auctions for the 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz bands conducted by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs in July 2026. Despite this projected increase, Indonesia remains behind regional peers; Singapore is forecasted to reach 91% coverage within the next four years, and the Philippines is expected to see a 46% share of 5G connections by 2030.
Regarding future technologies, GSMA Asia Pacific Head Julian Gorman suggests that Indonesia should focus on maximizing the economic benefits and innovations of 5G before transitioning to 6G. With commercial 6G standards not expected until approximately 2028 and first commercial networks appearing around 2030, the priority remains ensuring 5G drives tangible economic transformation similar to how 4G enabled digital platforms.
