Indonesia accelerates industrial downstreaming for aluminum and copper

Indonesia is accelerating its industrial downstreaming strategy to transform raw natural resources into high-value industrial products. Minister of Investment and Downstreaming Rosan Roeslani announced a goal to achieve aluminum self-sufficiency by 2030. This initiative involves developing an integrated ecosystem in Mempawah, West Kalimantan, covering the entire production chain from bauxite and alumina to finished aluminum.

In East Java, the development of copper refining facilities in Gresik is also a key component of this national economic transformation. President Prabowo Subianto has emphasized that downstreaming is a central strategy to strengthen the national economy and integrate Indonesia into global supply chains. This includes various projects such as coal processing into dimethyl ether (DME), gold and copper refining, and industrial salt processing.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Manyar smelter in Gresik is noted as a critical facility with global-scale copper concentrate processing capacity, which is nearing operational readiness.
