Indonesia battles intense wildfires with aid from Malaysia and Japan
Indonesia is battling widespread wildfires across Sumatra and Borneo, exacerbated by a severe El Niño phenomenon. The fires have caused significant environmental damage, with at least 895,657 hectares burned since January. The resulting toxic haze has crossed international borders, affecting air quality in Malaysia and Singapore.
To combat the crisis, the Indonesian government has deployed 64 aircraft—including 55 from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and nine from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI)—and 54,394 personnel since August. As of September 20, 2026, the SiPongi system recorded 1,532 national hotspots.
In response to the emergency, Malaysia has offered assistance, which Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has accepted. The Malaysian aid package includes one Bombardier CL-415MP aircraft, three helicopters, and 52 personnel. Additionally, Japan has previously deployed over 300 military personnel to Borneo to assist in firefighting efforts. Both Indonesia and Malaysia are also discussing long-term preventive measures to manage transboundary haze and forest management.
