Indonesia acquires first aircraft carrier KRI Sriwijaya

The Indonesian Navy has received the ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi, a former Italian light aircraft carrier, which arrived at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta on September 18. The vessel will be renamed KRI Sriwijaya and is set to become the first aircraft carrier in the Indonesian Navy's fleet. The official handover and flag ceremony are scheduled for September 24.

This acquisition marks a strategic shift for Indonesia as it seeks to transition from a coastal defense force to a blue-water navy capable of long-term operations in open seas. Following Thailand, Indonesia will become the second nation in Southeast Asia to operate such a vessel.

Beyond traditional military roles, the ship is intended for multi-purpose use. Admiral Muhammad Ali noted its utility in humanitarian and disaster relief operations. Additionally, President Prabowo Subianto has expressed plans to modify the vessel to carry helicopters and drones, including for forest fire suppression missions.
