Indonesia activates 24-hour airport operations amid volcanic ash

Indonesia has activated several alternative airports to operate 24 hours a day to manage flight disruptions caused by volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that airports including Kertajati, Ahmad Yani, Juanda, Yogyakarta International, and Adi Soemarmo are operating around the clock to accommodate diversions and accelerate schedule recovery.

At least eight airports have faced temporary closures due to unsafe conditions from volcanic ash, including Soekarno-Hatta International, Halim Perdanakusuma, and Radin Inten II. The government is monitoring ash movement, which was recently observed at an altitude of approximately 15,000 feet moving southwest.

To assist affected travelers, the Transportation Ministry and InJourney Airports are providing ground transportation from Soekarno-Hatta to alternative hubs. Additionally, airlines like Singapore Airlines are adjusting aircraft types to increase capacity, and several domestic flight routes have been added to stabilize regional connectivity.
