Indonesia advances elderly welfare through policy and urban design

Indonesia is advancing national strategies to address its aging population through policy consolidation and localized urban design. The Social Affairs Ministry recently led a consolidation process for the 2026 Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) survey in Jakarta. This initiative gathers data from various ministries, government agencies, and NGOs to validate national progress in senior development, including social protection, health services, and long-term care.

These efforts align with Presidential Regulation No. 88 of 2021 and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. On a local level, research in Yogyakarta highlights the importance of elderly-friendly urban village designs. Using a case study in Purbayan Urban Village, studies suggest that integrating institutional arrangements with community involvement and spatial environments can improve physical and mental health outcomes for older adults.
