Indonesia forest fires cause fatalities and regional haze crisis
Indonesia is facing its most severe forest and land fires in over a decade, resulting in significant human and economic costs. In Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, four personnel were killed and two others seriously injured while battling flames.
The fires have triggered a regional environmental crisis. Haze from Kalimantan and Sumatra has spread across Indonesia, reaching the atmosphere of Java and affecting areas like Jakarta, Banten, and West Java. The smoke has also crossed international borders, impacting air quality in neighboring Malaysia, Singapore, and even reaching the Philippines.
The health and economic impacts are substantial. Indonesia has recorded 283,270 acute respiratory infection (ISPA) cases between August and October 13, 2026. In the aviation sector, 2,458 domestic scheduled flights have been affected by haze since August 11, including over 1,300 cancellations or postponements and numerous delays and diversions.
Authorities are responding to the crisis through various means. In Mount Arjuno, over 27 personnel are conducting manual firefighting due to a lack of aerial water bombing support. Meanwhile, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) continues to monitor air quality and wind patterns, advising the public, especially vulnerable groups, to wear masks and limit outdoor activities.
