Australia and Indonesia advance security ties at 2+2 meeting

Australia and Indonesia held their 10th Foreign and Defence Ministers’ 2+2 Meeting in Melbourne on August 26, 2026. This marks the first major ministerial engagement following the signing of the Jakarta Treaty on Common Security in February 2026.

Key discussions focused on implementing the treaty, advancing the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) ratification, and developing infrastructure in Morotai. The ministers also addressed maritime domain awareness, cyber security, and regional stability. To enhance interoperability, the two nations are preparing for the Keris Woomera military exercises scheduled for October 2026.

Beyond defense, the partnership is expanding into resilience-based cooperation. Ministers agreed to prioritize food and energy security to address regional vulnerabilities. Additionally, efforts are underway to promote cultural exchange and language learning, including initiatives to increase the study of Bahasa Indonesia in Australia.
