Indonesia and Australia partner to protect children online

Indonesia and Australia have agreed to strengthen bilateral coordination to protect children in the digital space. During a high-level ministerial meeting in Jakarta, Indonesian Communication and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid met with Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke to discuss aligning regulatory frameworks and increasing accountability for digital platforms.

Minister Hafid noted that both nations have existing regulations to restrict minors' access to certain platforms, such as Indonesia’s Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 and Australia’s age-based social media restrictions. The ministers aim to synchronize monitoring efforts to ensure tech companies comply with domestic safeguards.

Beyond child safety, the discussions covered cybersecurity resilience, digital talent development, and artificial intelligence governance. Indonesia is currently drafting a presidential regulation on AI, including a national development roadmap and ethical code. To implement these goals, Indonesia has proposed the creation of a joint bilateral working group to develop enforcement measures.
