Indonesia and China deepen defense and technology ties
Indonesia and China have agreed to significantly deepen their strategic partnership following high-level ministerial meetings in Jakarta. The discussions, which included the second 2+2 ministerial dialogue and the inaugural China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue, focused on expanding cooperation across defense, technology, and economic sectors.
In the defense sector, both nations pledged to increase joint military exercises, enhance personnel exchanges, and expand military education and training. A key component of this agreement involves military technology cooperation, with plans for Chinese technology transfer to support Indonesia’s defense industry. This includes a joint development initiative involving the Indonesian state arms manufacturer Pindad, scheduled to commence in 2027.
Beyond security, the two countries are expanding collaboration into digital and emerging technologies. They agreed to establish a working group to deepen cooperation in communications, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital affairs. Discussions also covered potential synergies in mineral resources to support semiconductor and microchip manufacturing, as well as cooperation in energy, food security, and the development of communications satellites.
These developments occur as Indonesia continues to navigate its ‘free and active’ foreign policy, seeking to maintain robust economic and strategic ties with both China and the United States amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.
