Indonesia and Egypt target US$5 billion in trade and expand educational ties
Indonesia and Egypt are strengthening bilateral ties through new agreements in trade and education. During a visit to Jakarta, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto set a target to increase bilateral trade to US$5 billion by 2030, more than doubling the 2025 figure of US$2.38 billion.
The leaders witnessed the signing of four memoranda covering fisheries, statistics, a strategic partnership action plan, and visa exemptions for official passports. Discussions also touched on expanding cooperation in palm oil, phosphate fertilizers, energy, and logistics involving Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara.
In the educational sector, the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Al-Azhar University in Egypt. This agreement aims to develop higher education programs, including potential double-degree schemes where students split their studies between Indonesia and Egypt, as well as online learning options.
