Sivarasa Anojan, a Sri Lankan migrant worker in Saudi Arabia, is reportedly facing a death sentence following an appeal. He was originally sentenced to five years in prison and a fine of 3 million Saudi Riyals for social media comments deemed insulting to Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.

While Anojan's family and legal counsel state that the punishment has been upgraded to capital punishment, the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has noted that it has not yet received official written confirmation of the death sentence. The Ministry stated it is closely monitoring the situation through its embassy in Riyadh and is coordinating with Saudi authorities.

Legal representatives suggest the judgment may be appealed to the Saudi Arabian Supreme Court within one month. In response to the severity of the case, a Sri Lankan Member of Parliament has formally appealed to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use India's diplomatic influence with Saudi Arabia to assist in securing a favorable outcome.
