Indonesia and Saudi Arabia expand higher education and research cooperation

Indonesia and Saudi Arabia are expanding bilateral cooperation in higher education, research, and science. Officials from both nations met in Jakarta to discuss immediate implementation of programs such as student and lecturer exchanges, joint degrees, and collaborative research projects.

Saudi Education Minister Yousef Abdullah Al-Benyan noted that the Saudi government offers over 1,000 scholarships for Indonesian students across all academic fields, though only about 50 percent have been utilized to date. The discussions also emphasized teacher capacity building and digital education.

As of 2026, there are 95 active cooperation documents between Indonesian and Saudi Arabian universities, comprising 45 Memorandums of Understanding (MoU), 33 Memorandums of Agreement (MoA), and 17 Implementation Arrangements (IA). The partnership aims to strengthen STEM fields and academic mobility between the two countries.
