Indonesia announces 2026 Muharram fasting dates, noting government‑NU differences
The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs has published the official Hijri calendar for Muharram 1448 AH, placing 1 Muharram on Tuesday, 16 June 2026. Accordingly, the government‑aligned schedule sets Tasua (9 Muharram) on Wednesday 24 June, Asyura (10 Muharram) on Thursday 25 June, and the recommended optional fast on Friday 26 June.
Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) estimates the new moon one day later, assigning 1 Muharram to Wednesday 17 June 2026. Under this version, Tasua falls on Thursday 25 June, Asyura on Friday 26 June, and the additional fast on Saturday 27 June. Both calendars also list the subsequent Ayyamul Bidh (full‑moon days) from 12 to 15 Muharram, spanning 28 June to 1 July 2026.
The differing dates stem from each body’s method of moon‑sighting, but religious scholars emphasize that the spiritual merit of the fasts remains the same regardless of the calendar used.
