Indonesia launches Merdeka Run and public ticket program for 81st Independence Day
The Indonesian government is preparing a series of events to mark the 81st anniversary of the nation’s independence on 17 August 2026. Deputy State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro announced that a public ticket program – dubbed “war ticket” – will be opened so up to 8,100 citizens can attend the Detik‑Detik Proklamasi ceremony at Merdeka Palace, with President Prabowo Subianto serving as the ceremony’s inspector.
A free Merdeka Run will be held as one of the closing activities of the Independence Month. The run, starting from the front of Merdeka Palace, will feature four distances – 1 km, 5 km, 8 km and 10 km – and participants will receive finisher medals and prizes. The month‑long program follows the theme “Indonesia Berdaulat, Adil, dan Makmur” and involves ministries, state‑owned enterprises, regional authorities, the armed forces and police, among other stakeholders.
