Indonesia arrests 72 suspects over forest and peatland fires

Indonesian authorities have arrested 72 individuals suspected of deliberately starting forest and peatland fires. The arrests are part of an investigation into 89 separate fire cases spanning five provinces on Borneo and four on Sumatra. Investigators are currently examining financial records to determine if corporations financed or ordered the land clearing to reduce agricultural costs.

The fires, exacerbated by an intensifying El Niño pattern and a prolonged dry season, have generated a dense, choking haze that has crossed international borders into Malaysia. The Indonesian Environment Ministry reported over 3,700 hot spots during the recent activity, with significant blazes occurring in West, Central, and South Kalimantan.

President Prabowo Subianto visited Central Kalimantan, where over 7,600 hectares have burned, to pledge government support. He promised the deployment of resources, including helicopters and water pumps, to contain the blazes and vowed to hold any contributing companies accountable. Suspects face potential penalties including heavy fines and prison sentences of up to 15 years.
