Papua human rights concerns escalate at United Nations

Human rights concerns in Papua have gained international attention following statements made by the Solomon Islands at the United Nations. The Solomon Islands expressed concern regarding alleged human rights violations and called for an independent verification visit by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Filep Wamafma, Vice Chair of the DPD RI Papua Special Committee, has urged President Prabowo Subianto to take concrete steps to resolve the conflict and protect civilians. He noted that the issue has taken on a regional dimension, as the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) continues to advocate for UN access to Papua provinces. Reports indicate that Indonesia's status as an Associate Member of the MSG may be reviewed in 2027 if these requests are not addressed.

Local community groups, including Papua Muda Progresif, are also calling for open dialogue between the government and the people to find peaceful solutions. They emphasize the need for legal protections for indigenous rights and civilians. Data from Komnas HAM recorded 42 incidents of armed conflict and violence in Papua during the first half of 2026, resulting in 59 deaths, including 43 civilians.
