Indonesia authorities intercept illegal gold smuggling and investigate illicit trade

Authorities in Indonesia are investigating the circulation of gold suspected to originate from illegal mining operations in Papua. In Makassar, reports have emerged regarding a gold shop allegedly processing and selling gold without clear legality or origin documentation. Such activities violate mineral and coal mining regulations and may involve money laundering if the proceeds are used to disguise criminal assets.

In a separate enforcement action, the North Sulawesi Regional Police intercepted an attempt to smuggle 16 gold bars, weighing approximately 16 kg, through Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado. Two Chinese nationals were detained after X-ray machines detected the gold inside their luggage. The suspects were reportedly attempting to transport the illegal gold to Singapore and subsequently to Hong Kong. The individuals face charges under the Mineral and Coal Mining Law.
