Indonesia automotive market shifts toward commercial vehicles and Chinese brands
Indonesia's automotive market is undergoing a significant structural shift, according to Gaikindo data for January-July 2026. The top sales rankings have moved away from traditional family cars toward light commercial vehicles. The Toyota Kijang Innova/Zenix leads with 36,880 units, followed by the Daihatsu Gran Max Pick Up (30,825 units) and the Suzuki Carry Pick Up (24,559 units). This trend suggests a growing consumer focus on micro-businesses and logistics.
Notably, the Chinese sub-brand Jaecoo J5 has broken into the top five, signaling increased consumer trust in Chinese automotive technology. Conversely, the Honda Brio, once a market leader, has fallen out of the top ten.
On a macro level, the Indonesian government is targeting annual vehicle sales of over 850,000 units for 2026. Deputy Minister of Industry Faisol Riza expressed optimism that this target will allow Indonesia to reclaim its position as the largest automotive market in the region, potentially surpassing Malaysia's projected total industry volume of 800,000 units.
