Indonesia digital economy expands amid banking transformation

Indonesia is experiencing a significant shift toward a digital economy, characterized by rapid growth in digital payment volumes and the evolution of financial services. Bank Indonesia reported that digital payment transactions reached 16.07 billion in the first half of 2026, a 36.88% annual increase. This surge is reflected in the rise of mobile banking and QRIS usage.

This digital transformation is reshaping the banking landscape. The number of physical bank branches in Indonesia decreased by approximately 1.42% in the first half of 2026, falling to 3,398 units, as institutions like Maybank Indonesia adjust their networks to meet changing consumer behaviors. Simultaneously, the peer-to-peer lending sector has grown, with outstanding financing reaching Rp105.63 trillion as of July 2026.

As the digital ecosystem expands, stakeholders are focusing on security and literacy. The Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (OJK) is emphasizing transparency in lending to protect consumers, while banks like hibank are conducting financial literacy programs for MSMEs. Additionally, the rise of digital technology is facilitating new forms of social impact through digital philanthropy platforms like Ayobantu.com.
