Indonesia battles fires: Karanganyar shoe factory blaze and Tasikmalaya land blazes

A large fire broke out at the PT Porto Indonesia Sejahtera shoe factory in Kemiri, Karanganyar, on 19 July 2026. The blaze started around 08:45 local time and spread quickly due to plastic raw materials and strong winds. More than a dozen fire trucks, along with police, military personnel and volunteers, fought the fire for six hours before it was extinguished. Preliminary estimates put the damage at between 5 billion and 10 billion rupiah, and a nearby fuel station had to suspend operations. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

In Tasikmalaya, authorities reported multiple grassland fires across five districts, affecting roughly 2,050 m². The fires, which occurred during a severe dry season, were believed to be caused by discarded cigarette butts and open waste‑burning. Three fire‑engine units were deployed, and the situation was brought under control without loss of life. Local disaster management officials emphasized public education to prevent further incidents during the drought period.
