Indonesia battles massive wildfires fueled by El Niño
Indonesia is facing a severe environmental emergency as extreme drought driven by El Niño fuels massive wildfires across Borneo and Sumatra. Satellite data from the Nusantara Atlas indicates that over 285,000 hectares have burned through July, with more than 224,000 individual fires recorded on August 20 alone.
The fires are particularly difficult to combat because they penetrate deep into organic peat soils. This subterranean combustion creates intense heat that is largely resistant to aerial water drops and releases massive amounts of carbon dioxide and fine particulate matter into the atmosphere.
To mitigate the crisis, the Indonesian government is intensifying cloud seeding operations. This technique involves dispersing silver iodide and salts into clouds to stimulate rainfall. According to the meteorological agency BMKG, Indonesia has conducted 252 cloud seeding operations between 2021 and August of this year, a significant increase from previous decades.
