Indonesia bolsters oil and gas sector via technical training and production stability
Indonesia's upstream oil and gas sector is implementing technical and human resource strategies to maintain production stability and tap into unconventional hydrocarbon reserves. PT Pertamina (Persero) has launched intensive training programs, such as Extended-Reach Drilling (ERD) Well Design, to equip engineers with the skills necessary to develop unconventional wells located deep within source rock layers.
Despite an annual natural decline rate of 15-20% in mature fields, national oil lifting remained stable between 576.2 and 578.2 MBOPD through the third quarter of 2026. This stability is attributed to technological efficiencies like batch drilling and dual completion, as well as the progress of major projects including the LNG Abadi Masela Block and the Northern Hub in East Kalimantan. The sector is currently transitioning several large-scale upstream projects from the planning phase to physical execution.
