Indonesia Boosts Packaging Recycling to Advance Green Industry

Indonesia's Ministry of Industry is strengthening post‑consumer packaging management as part of a broader push to accelerate the country's transition to a green industry and achieve net‑zero emissions by 2050. Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the strategy aims to improve competitiveness, increase production efficiency, foster technological innovation and expand the circular economy.

The ministry has prepared an industrial decarbonisation roadmap for priority manufacturing subsectors, notably food and beverage, and highlighted the role of PET bottle recycling. According to a Sustainable Waste Indonesia study, PET bottles account for about 9 % of domestic plastic use but enjoy a high collection and recycling rate of roughly 71 %, with an estimated 435,000 metric tons of PET waste generated annually and 307,000 metric tons collected. Acting Director General of Agro‑Industry Putu Juli Ardika and Director Merrijantij Punguan Pintaria stressed the need for collaboration among government, businesses, academia and other stakeholders to expand green‑industry practices across the sector.
