Indonesia boosts UMKM with free halal certification and mandatory NIB for e‑commerce
Bandung DPRD member Indri Rindani highlighted the need for collaborative policies to strengthen the city’s creative economy and help micro, small and medium enterprises (UMKM) seize digital‑era opportunities. She noted, "Kota Bandung memiliki potensi besar sebagai kota kreatif" and called for joint action among government, businesses, academia and communities.
The Ministry of Tourism announced a free halal‑certification programme that has issued 31,548 certificates in 1,116 village‑tourism sites across 34 provinces since 2025. Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said the certification “increases product competitiveness and opens wider market access for both domestic and foreign tourists.”
The Ministry of Trade issued Regulation No. 19/2026 obliging all e‑commerce sellers to obtain a Nomor Induk Berusaha (NIB) through the Online Single Submission (OSS) system, with an 18‑month transition for existing sellers and six months for newcomers. Trade Minister Budi Santoso emphasized that the NIB “provides legal status, builds consumer trust and unlocks financing and partnership opportunities.”
The Ministry of UMKM reinforced that NIB is essential for accessing government financing, export markets and other support programmes. Deputy Head Bagus Rachman noted that only about 16 million of the estimated 56 million Indonesian UMKM have obtained an NIB and described the upcoming “Sapa UMKM” digital platform that will integrate services across ministries.
