Indonesia Boosts Village Cooperatives and Green Waqf Solar Projects

The Indonesian government is using the 81st Independence Day as a catalyst for two major economic initiatives. Minister of Village and Rural Development Yandri Susanto announced a coordinated effort to strengthen the Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih program, involving village heads, village consultative bodies and ten village associations to expand cooperative services that deliver subsidised goods, government assistance and market access for rural producers.

At the Indonesia Net‑Zero Summit 2026, representatives of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Badan Wakaf Indonesia presented the Green Waqf framework, aiming to mobilise Zakat, Infak, Sedekah and Wakaf funds—estimated at up to Rp 400 trillion annually—to install solar panels on mosque roofs. Commissioner M. Ali Yusuf said the scheme could contribute to Indonesia’s target of 100 GW of solar capacity, reduce electricity costs for places of worship and redirect surplus revenues to community development.
