Indonesia celebrates National Batik Day and cultural heritage
Indonesia is celebrating National Batik Day, an annual observance on October 2nd that commemorates the 2009 UNESCO recognition of batik as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This year’s celebrations feature the theme ‘Batik Berlayar’ (Batik Sailing), with major activities centered in Surabaya.
Various sectors are engaging with the tradition. The Ministry of Culture, led by Fadli Zon, is focusing on protecting intellectual property for traditional motifs and promoting batik as a sustainable creative industry. In the commercial sector, Shopee Indonesia reported high demand for classic motifs like Parang and Kawung, with significant exports to Malaysia and Thailand. Fashion brands such as Danar Hadi and Ragam Bentala are also working to modernize batik, adapting traditional patterns into contemporary, casual styles to appeal to younger generations.
Cultural institutions and local authorities are also participating. The Banten Regional Police have called on youth to preserve the heritage, while various museums, including the National Museum of Indonesia and Ullen Sentalu, offer opportunities for the public to learn about the history and philosophy behind different batik patterns.
